INVOCATION:

Susan  Price

50/50:

Bill Price (not fixed really)
Phil Morrow (sorry Phil maybe next week)

VISITING ROTARIAN:

Ulli Lange from Colorado and Lars recently returned from a bike ride in Germany and while there visited one of Germany’s many Rotary Clubs. Rotarians were very friendly and interesting. The meal was about $27 along and it was accompanied by an interesting program on PayPal. Also in attendance were students from Taiwan. Ulli  will be returning home to Colorado next week. We will keep Lars here!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • We welcomed home our traveling Rotarians, Dorothy Tecklenburg from Iceland and Tom Drewitz and Andy Goudy from different cruises. Seem as though everyone had a great experience and maybe we will hear more about travels at a later time.
  • Dictionary Program began today with Betsy West, Joe Marsh and Kathy Sabol presenting at Joe Walker at 9:00am. When asked for impressions Betsy wondered if a dictionary could be replaced by Siri or Alexa? Student response “Siri not always right.” Joe observed reactions of the class as Betsy spoke and felt a sense of melancholy in the student facial expressions. Let’s hope it was only because of this being early Monday morning…these children are our future.
  • The dictionary schedule was updated by Andy (director of project) and a few more volunteers needed for Claysville, Avella, Ft Cherry, and Trinity South. If interested in giving an hour of service contact Andy. Next up members will travel to Burgettstown and Trinity West on October 11, remember to pick up the books at Brad’s (Hicksons)
  • Avenue of Service Awards: Nominations are in and the Board of Directors will review and determine the recipients. Board members must contact Nan today (Wednesday) with your selections. Awards program in the Ballroom on October 30 and arrangements must be made with the food service, programs, table requirements, and we always try to have centerpieces to liven up the atmosphere.
  • One Summit District Program will be held on Saturday, October 20 at Cal U. Rides can be arranged for this half day program. This is a tremendous opportunity to meet Rotarians from other Clubs and to see what they are doing in the way of programs, tributes, activities and membership options.
  • Tom Drewitz was inspired with the account of Ulli and Lars and their visit to a meeting in Germany. Tom points us to get the Rotary Club Locator on their smart phones and see where you may visit no matter where your travels take you. When traveling you can exchange Club Banners, something new to some of you and we have them…just ask.
Download the Rotary Club Locator app

  • McMurray Rotary Club is having a bowling event at the Meadows on Friday, October 26 at 6:00pm. Costumes are optional and fun will abound. Reserve a lane, put together a team and enjoy the fun, food, cash bar. The fee to be a part of this includes the bowling shoes. More details available but it does sound like fun…let’s consider a team!
  • Chick-fil-A Spirit Night on October 11 from 4-8pm. Dine at the Washington restaurant between these hours and 20% of sales will be donated to Rise Against Hunger. Part of the funds will go to Dave Hart’s Church for packing meals on October 27. Need help???
  • Former Rotarian Bill Speakman now out of the hospital.  Cards may be sent to: William Speakman, Paramount Personal Care, 240 Cedar Hill Drive, Canonsburg, PA 15317

HAPPY $$$$$$$

Dave Hart  happy for the opportunity to have Chick-Fil-A assist his church with providing the meals to pack. Remember to think about volunteering.
Tripp Kline happy to have a good Italian meal at the Festival and dined with fellow Rotarians Karen Reese and Mom (Rose Gillespie), and the Prices. Great evening weather wise and food wise.
Lars Lange gave $3.00 for meetings missed and for John Tecklenburg taking him to a PENS game on Saturday and something I forgot….Just remembered: 15 Germans will come to the US next August to bike the Allegheny Passage. It would be great if we as a Club could find a way to entertain them?? Think about it and remember the great times in the past with our many foreign visitors through the GSE Program.
Andy Goudy: happy to be back from his 10 day cruise and it was wonderful. Weather NOT a consideration but last year’s cruise was a different story.
Dorothy Tecklenburg: Went to Philadelphia by train and on the return trip there was a Chinese gentleman who spoke no English and thus Dorothy stepped in to act as his interpreter. It was great fun until she realized she told him the train would be 7 hours late, NOT that it would be late getting in and wouldn’t be in Pittsburgh until 7:00. Oh well…again Dorothy reaches out to assist where needed.
Tom Drewitz: happy his new grandson is home from the hospital and is almost 4 pounds….a real bruiser but all is good and he is healthy, just small.
Bill Allison: noted that for some students the dictionary is their real first and only book. Bill also updated us on Bill Speakman.

There was no program today. Next week’s program will be about Rotary Foundation partnership initiative with the American Cancer Society. The guest presenter will be Nancy Verderber from the Cancer Society.
